Today I worked in our regular Assisted Living activities or our AL side. On this side, our residents vary from independent to vegetable. For activities, we get residents who are more independent.
Well, today we played the Wii. Now, I'm sure many of you have confused looks on your faces. Why are you playing the Wii with 80 year olds? Let me explain. We have one wii-mote, which limits our options for games, so we bowl. It is also the simplest game for our residents to understand. We choose 4-player and pass the wii-mote along the line. It doesn't even matter if the same person plays the same character. They enjoy throwing the ball down the lane, without ever actually throwing a ball. It is the best thing to watch them get excited as the ball putters its way down down the virtual lane.
The best part, though, is when they really start to get the hang of using the wii-mote and start bowling strikes. The excitement between them as a crowd is amazing to watch and be part of. They can be the most competitive people, but when someone bowls a strike, the entire room erupts into cheers. It's these days that I realize how much I love my job.
